How to read your tyres

The size of a tyre is on the sidewall of the tyre. Youโ€™ll see a series of numbers and letters, such as 205/55/R16 91V.
Below are your tyre sizes, each number means the following:
  • 205 โ€“ Tyres width in millimetres
  • 45 โ€“ Sidewall height (%of the width)
  • R17 โ€“ Diameter of the tyreโ€™s inner rim (inches)
  • 91 โ€“ Load Rating
  • V โ€“ Indicates the maximum speed for the tyre when at full load (Known as the speed rating)

Helpful information for your tyres

It is illegal to have a tyre on the road if the grooves of the tread pattern of every tyre fitted to the wheel of the vehicle do not have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre. This applies to tyres on cars, light vans (not exceeding 3,500kg gross weight) and light trailers.
It is illegal to have a tyre on the road if your tyre has a cut in the rubber in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width in length or the tyre has a lump or bulge you will need to get this checked out immediately as the tyre would not be road legal.
